We are thrilled to announce the Houston Bar Association has won five State Bar of Texas Stars of Texas Bars Awards. The awards were presented during the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting held in Austin last week. The HBA's 2023 Stars of Texas Bars Awards are:

HBA Past President Alistair B. Dawson (2017-2018), partner at Beck Redden LLP, is this year's recipient of the State Bar of Texas' Judge Sam Williams Award. The award, named in honor of long-time Northeast Texas Bar Association President Judge Sam Williams, was established in 1990 to honor an individual who demonstrates a commitment to fostering and maintaining the relationship between his or her local bar association and the State Bar of Texas.
During his time as HBA President, Alistair worked with others to mobilize the legal community to provide much-needed legal help to thousands of Houstonians in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. He also launched the HBA Project TRAIN Committee to help individuals with special needs obtain employment with law firms and corporate legal departments. Alistair is also a member of the Houston Bar Foundation Board of Directors, served as the 2022-2023 Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Texas Bar Foundation, and serves as Commissioner on the Texas Equal Access to Justice Commission.
2022-2023 State Bar of Texas President and HBA Past President (2015-2016) Laura Gibson presented Alistair the Judge Sam Williams Award at the State Bar of Texas' Annual Meeting in Austin. Congratulations, Alistair!
The HBA is also incredibly proud of the Houston Volunteer Lawyers' champions for access to justice who received awards:
- Hillary Holmes of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP received the Frank J. Scurlock Award
- Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP received the W. Frank Newton Award
- Julie Stanger of Chevron received the Pro Bono Coordinator Award
