Below are resources for Houstonians interested in providing legal and humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian and Afghan refugees.
Catholic Charitie’s Cabrini Center for Immigrant Legal Assistance and the Tahirih Justice Center are at the forefront of providing pro bono legal services to those who have fled their homelands out of fear. While it is currently unclear what pro bono help will be needed for those fleeing Ukraine, it is clear that there are immediate unmet legal needs among approximately 4,000 – 5,000 Afghanis recently resettled into the greater Houston area.
If you are interested in volunteering for Catholic Charities’ Cabrini Center for Immigrant Legal Assistance to help Afghanis with asylum, you may reach out to Elise Griesmyer egriesmyer@catholiccharities.org.
If you are interested in helping an Afghan who has a gender-based violence claim for protection, Tahirih Justice Center is seeking pro bono attorneys to help with Tahirih’s Afghan Asylum Project. Contact Maricarmen Garza, MaricarmenG@tahirih.org or visit Tahirih Justice Center’s website.
